Every requirement of mankind can be fulfilled by plants and trees. Everything we eat to everything we use is derived from the greenery surrounding us. Albeit late, man has realized the importance of greenery and nature. Hence, the growing passion towards greenery and greenhouses. The structure built with a particular technology that facilitates the plants of the greenhouse to flourish better.

The need – The increasing usage of electronic equipment and the radiations from them are causing a greater level of damage to the ozone layer of the atmosphere which in turn is emitting harmful UV rays that can spoil plants and vegetations. This is where the need for greenhouses arise. Most of the vegetables and fruits are tropic or subtropic. But we cannot provide a tropic climate uniformly across the globe. To set the same environment to grow certain regional plants and to save them from the harsh rays it is necessary to build and maintain a greenhouse.

The structure – Though it is presumed to be expensive, the need is vital. The basic idea is to provide the climate needed for a particular crop. The greenhouse is also called a glasshouse. The walls and roof are made mainly of transparent material (preferably green in color). The glass is such that it is favorable to provide moderate temperatures. The size can be chosen as per the requirement. It can be as small as a shed or can be as huge as an industrial space. A cold frame is a miniature greenhouse.

The working – Commercial Glasshouses or greenhouses also called hot houses are technically well designed to facilitate production of vegetables and flowers. Particular equipment such as screening, heating, cooling, lighting and other computer controlled devices are installed inside the greenhouse to maintain the required climatic conditions for the plant to grow efficiently. Various techniques are used to maintain temperature and comfort ratio of the greenhouse microclimate which considers the temperature, humidity and vapor pressure deficit. This plays a vital role in reducing the losses due to the wrong cultivation of a particular crop.

Greenhouses are designed technically well in order to provide proper ventilation, heating, and carbon dioxide movement inside it which are the crucial requirements for any plant’s development and productivity. They are divided into two types namely: Glass greenhouses and Plastic Greenhouses. Domestic greenhouses mostly are glass with a typical 3 mm glass used in the structure. It is well known as horticultural glass grade, a high-quality glass without any air bubbles. Polyethylene film is mostly used for plastic greenhouses. Commercial glass greenhouses are often used for vegetables or flowers. These are filled with the equipment as explained above. Certain vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes need a little modification in the environment which can be done through the computer controlled equipment. Now, to set up your own greenhouse there are a few steps to be followed which include:

1. Choose the frame
2. Design the doors and hardware
3. Choose the covering – glass or plastic
4. Cooling and ventilation to be checked and executed
5. Select a proper heating system/ equipment
6. Installation of environmental controls
7. Installation of other systems like carbon dioxide and water regulators
8. Benching
9. Order the greenhouse
10. Build it

A greenhouse whether domestic or commercial, it ensures the risk-free growth of plants. It is important to make a greenhouse productive. Once it is fit and made productive it can be used round the year to grow all seasonal plants. It is also required to calculate the floor space and plan what crops can be grown. One should also know the right devices like pots and trays to be used for particular crops. Proper fertilizers like a multipurpose compost should be used to achieve perfect germination. Water should be supplied at regular intervals and at proper quantities. With all this, a greenhouse is going to be successfully productive to grow any kind of plant in any season.
